What We Do
MedTerp offers a comprehensive suite of educational opportunities to assist interpreters and transliterators in becoming competent and qualified to function in the medical setting. These workshops can be offered as a complete Medical Interpreting Institute or as individual courses. Some workshops may be offered by a single facilitator, while others require both Rachel and Jay's collective expertise. Workshops can also be developed to meet individual organization needs. Below is a summary of our current offerings.
Medical Interpreting Workshops
Introduction to Medical Interpreting
This workshop is designed to provide an overview of interpreting in the medical setting. Topics to be discussed include the role of health care professionals and interpreters as practice professionals and specialists in a variety of medical settings, and some of the ethical decision-making that comes into play in the healthcare environment.
Medical Terminology for Interpreters
This workshop is designed as an interactive experience for the interpreter working in the medical setting. Focus is on becoming more comfortable with common medical terminology, including Latin derivatives and body system vocabulary. Goal is to provide basic working understanding and comfort with medical terminology that aids the interpreter in providing effective communication and cultural mediation. Discussion will include addressing individual experiences from participants that they wish to share from their own medical encounters in interpreting, as well as steps for self-protection.
Ethics and Law in the Medical Setting
This workshop will provide an introduction of how the medical setting, the legal setting, and ethics intersect in the healthcare environment. Areas of focus include emergent, inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic settings.
The Team Approach in the Medical Setting
This workshop is an interactive experience involving a novel approach to the interpreting dynamic in the medical setting. Case scenarios and ethical discussion allow for active participation during the workshop. This approach is a “Team Approach” in which the interpreter is a member of the medical team, with valued input to achieve linguistic and professional presence.
Debriefing and Social Construction of Knowledge
This discussion-based debriefing provides a social venue to reflect and process what participants learned during the workshops. Social construction of knowledge is a powerful learning process that is conducive to affecting change. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, share perspectives, and provide feedback to the presenter and each other.

Specialty Topic Workshops
Mental Health Interpreting: Letting Some Light Into the Black Box
This workshop is designed as an interactive "101" to provide core information on interpreting in mental heath settings. Mental health professional roles and settings are discussed. Participants have the opportunity to interactively explore demands unique to mental health interpreting, such as the Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE). The challenge of voicing for dysfluent clients is discussed at length, and mental health concepts such as transference, countertransference, therapeutic effectiveness, reporting, and vicarious trauma and safety are reviewed. The workshop also focuses on how participants can safely gain more experience and knowledge in the arena of mental health interpreting.
